Witelcom AS completes roll-out of Wifi onboard BW’s fleet of ships
Oslo, Norway, 27/06/2017
Witelcom AS has finalised the roll-out of WiFi on board BW’s fleet of ships, enabling crew to efficiently communicate with families, friends and colleagues onboard other ships.
The WiFi solution, provided by Witelcom AS, Norway, enables crew to efficiently connect their phones, tablets and PCs, and use such devices for both professional and personal tasks. The solution integrates seamlessly with the Dualog DCS platform and serves as an extension of the wired network to provide better connectivity.
The solution consists of multiple access points distributed throughout the ship and a central controller that manages these access points. These are the connected to the Dualog DCS that handles the interconnectivity to the VSAT capacity.
The BW fleet IT department specified that the solution should be supplied as pre-configured kits such that the installation needed to be true plug and play.
“Witelcom AS was instrumental in providing a turn-key solution that enabled BW to deploy WiFi across our fleet.” says Juzer Vasi, Project Manager, BW Fleet IT. “Within weeks of initial contact they proposed a solution and deployed a trial on LNG Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) BW Singapore soon after.”
After a successful trial on board BW Singapore, an agreement was made to roll out the system across the fleet and volume production of kits begun. To enable the BW Fleet IT organisation to deploy the kits on each ship a Workshop/Training session was held in BW’s Philippines office in Manila.
“The BW fleet WiFi project was a very interesting project for Witelcom AS as it would challenge us in terms of the different environment and demographics for the supply of Wifi. But as we specialise in providing broadband for any professional we had the resources and skills to overcome this.” says Petter Schønberg, CEO of Witelcom AS.
